MobileHelp Medical Alert Systems Review (May 2023)

Medical alert systems have been saving lives for over 3 decades now. They help provide prompt treatment which could mean a huge difference between complete recovery and a long-term disability. However, a lot of companies out there still use the same decades-long technology – a base unit that needs to be connected to a phone line, which means you can only be protected when you’re at home.

A fall or injury can be a devastating situation, particularly to an elderly person. Getting the help they need as quick as possible ensures they receive the best treatment. Thankfully, a company like MobileHelp is here to step out of the zone and use a more cutting-edge technology to protect you or your loved one, wherever you go.

MobileHelp claims to be the first medical alert system that provides maximum coverage and protection anywhere and everywhere. By providing customers with a compact, easy-to-carry mobile unit that’s built with the latest GPS (Global Positioning System) tracking technology, you can simply press a button and be instantly connected to a team of professional monitoring staff that’s standing by and ready to help you in any emergency situation. MobileHelp’s medical alert systems are especially designed to provide coverage and accountability anywhere and at any given time – whether that’s to the shopping center or on vacation in all 50 states in the US. And because the unit has built-in GPS, the monitoring team will know precisely where you are and immediately dispatch the closest ambulance, whenever necessary.

I have one of these devices for my father. He suffers from low blood pressure and has needed to use this device a few times. I can honestly say that if he did not have this he may not be with us today. The device worked better than I ever could have expected and they even contacted me each time he had an emergency. 5 stars for this!

I purchased this item using a discount code in exchange for my honest and unbiased review, but the product did not work as expected so I had to return it. I could not adequately review this product as I was unable to activate the service to work with this device. I still rate 5 stars as the company accepted my return without any issues. My 5 star rating is in relation to the ease of the return process. I wish this product would have worked for me, but I could not get the service activated to work correctly. If I could have gotten the product to work right it would have been a great product to have.

MobileHelp is a leading provider in medical alarms and health management solutions. Their flagship product, the MobileHelp Duo, was launched in 2009. The unit is designed to have both an in-home base station and a portable mobile extension, placing this medical alert system in a class of its own. Today, they have more products and services to offer to customers, including MobileHelp Connect, a deluxe suite of online tools to help the elderly and their authorize caregivers to actively take part in the user’s health and well-being.

Apart from offering products and services directly aimed at senior customers, MobileHelp also markets their equipment to other businesses. For instance, the company also manufactures in-home cellular units and portable medical alert equipment that have been incorporate into the systems of other medical alert companies. But even if the frontend box or device may look similar to the user, the purchases solutions will differ from company to company, such as their customization features, monitoring service, customer support, as well as contract and billing terms.

Apart from being a trailblazer for mobile personal emergency response systems (MPERS), MobileHelp sets itself apart by conducting research and development in health activity and data monitoring technologies. Their unique MobileVitals products and services, for example, offer additional monitoring options for those who want more from their medical alert system. The company even announced the launching of a new MobileVitals tablet product at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017.

What Are Mobile Medical Alert Systems?

Medical alert systems give you the confidence and peace of mind by providing emergency monitoring in and out of home. These devices are especially designed to signal an emergency and to contact the nearest available emergency medical personnel to provide assistance to those who require urgent attention. They can also be used to alert family members and/or caregivers. Once the system is triggered, a signal will be sent to an alarm monitoring system. Once the situation is assessed, the monitoring team will dispatch the required medical personnel (if needed) or contact family members.

MobileHelp is the first company to offer medical alert systems that work outside of home and are powered by a nationwide cellular network instead of a standard phone line. The products they offer include integration of nationwide wireless voice, GPS tracking, real-time monitoring, and prompt personal emergency assistance – no matter where you are in the US.

One vital component of the mobile medical alert system is the help button. With a single press of this button on your MobileHelp medical alert system, you can immediately notify a 24-hour US-based emergency call center where the operator has instant access to your medical history, as well as emergency contacts.  As for MobileHelp, their help buttons are not just water-resistant but can also be work as a pendant or a wristband. This means the user can confidently wear it at all times, even while in the shower.

MobileHelp offers two different types of mobile medical alert systems: Solo and Duo. Both systems use GPS technology, a space-based navigation technology that provides accurate location and time information based on satellite signals. This allows MobileHelp’s emergency call center to track your location and send medical responders to you right away.

In 2013, the company introduced fall buttons, which are a recent advancement in medical alert systems. Adding a fall button to your equipment is optional, and it works by automatically detecting falls and activating an emergency call. MobileHelp happens to be the first to introduce medical alert systems with fall detection feature to users who don’t have landline phone service. They also power majority of mobile medical alert systems available in the market, and their products are the first to be registered under FDA. Additionally, MobileHelp is backed by a US-based emergency response and monitoring team, composed of highly qualified and trained operators that are standing by round-the-clock to provide customers the assistance they need. These individuals are certified by the Security Industry Association, and have undergone extensive pre-screening and 6-week training, including continuing education so they can consistently improve and update their skills.

Here’s how MobileHelp’s medical alert systems work:

  1. Press the emergency button or pendant.
  2. Through GPS tracking, your location will immediately be sent to MobileHelp’s US-based emergency response operator, including your personal health information.
  3. Emergency response operator will establish two-way communication and assess the situation.
  4. Operator will then contact the closest possible caregiver, paramedics, or any other emergency service. By then, the operator will have already explained the situation to them. Once help is secured, the monitoring operator will contact the user’s family or neighbor.

MobileHelp Products: What Do They Have to Offer?

Living a secure and independent life is just as valuable for seniors as for younger adults. However, the elderly need constant protection that will support them 24/7. MobileHelp puts emphasis on caring for the elderly and strives to cover any situation that may occur to them in their everyday life. They offer a wide range of medical alert systems that are ideal for various medical needs and purposes. They offer four distinct systems of varying prices, features, and intended uses. These include the MobileHelp Classic, MobileHelp Solo, MobileHelp Duo, and MobileVitals.

Each package comes with the following units:

  • [Station] Home Base Station. Similar to a regular home medical alert system base station, except that it connects you through a nationwide cellular phone network instead of a standard phone line. The cellular connection is built into the system and uses AT&T’s network. All alert calls will be routed via AT&T. You can see their domestic wireless voice coverage here. As for battery power, the base station has a backup battery that last up to 30 hours max, keeping the system working for a long period of time even during a power blackout.
  • [Mobile] Mobile Portable Device. A lightweight device about the size of a deck of cards, this works just like a home base station, but with an additional GPS tracking feature. The device can easily be carried around by the elder when they are out and about, using the leather mobile pouch that you can purchase for as low as $9.95. It can be used as a standalone unit or together with the necklace or wristband help button pendants (which can signal an alarm via the wireless mobile device). The device can be charged through a slot found on the home base station, or in a separate charging cradle. Once fully charged, the device will have enough power to last several hours and longer. You can also purchase the optional car charger for on-the-go charging.

Note: The mobile portable device is not water-resistant.

  • [Buttons] Help Button Pendants. The help buttons are waterproof, which means they can be worn in baths and showers. Each help button has a battery life of up to 5 years.

MobileHelp’s medical alert system has a maximum in-home radius of 600 feet between the help buttons and the home base station. As for the distance between the mobile device and the help buttons, the maximum range is about 250 feet. The actual working range will largely depend on several different environment factors like physical obstacles or signal interference. The system’s overall performance will also be affected by the connection to AT&T’s cellular network. Therefore, we highly recommend users to test the system by making test calls from outlying points in their homes, as well as in areas they spend a lot of time at.

MobileHelp also offers a range of accessories and add-ons for when you purchase your medical alert system. The options include:

  • Automatic Fall Detection Button. For a small monthly fee of $10, you can upgrade your plan to include MobileHelp’s Fall Button, which is especially useful if the elderly user meets with an emergency and is unable to manually press the standard help button. This small and lightweight pendant can be worn comfortably around the neck and registers whenever the user falls to the ground or loses balance. And just like the regular help buttons, it’s water-resistant so it can still be worn by the user even while bathing or showering (where most incidents of falls occur). However, take note that this extra feature isn’t 100% accurate, as there are accidents that the sensing technology cannot ascertain. False alarms, however, can easily be cancelled on the base station, which is compatible with the Fall Detection Button. Still, we advise that the carrier must still press the help button to call for help, whenever possible.
  • Extra accessories such as a key storage lock box so emergency responders can easily access your home during an emergency and avoid damage to your home ($29.95); extra bracelet or pendant buttons ($1 each); LED flashlight that can be attached to the pendant or keychain ($14.95); cradle package ($1/month); wall mount button ($2/month); car charger that works just like a cigarette lighter adapter where you can charge the mobile unit in your car ($19.95); wall charger USB/AC adapter ($19.95); beaded breakaway lanyard (available in black and silver) for a more fashionable way to carry around your neck pendant ($19.95)

Other features that you can add to your package include:

  • Activity Tracking. Regular exercise improves muscle tone and balance, which are important in reducing the risk of falls and improving overall health and well-being. According to a study, those who go outside on a regular basis and remain active even indoors are less likely to develop health problems like chronic pain or sleep disorders. With the MobileHelp Fall Button and MobileHelp Connect (which we’re going to talk about later), you can subscribe to the Activity Tracking service and monitor your current activity levels from your pendant.
  • Medication Reminders (extra $5 monthly service). According to Mayo Clinic, 50% of falls occurring among the elderly is due to medication errors; the most common being that they forget to take their medicine. But by subscribing to MobileHelp’s Medication Reminders, seniors can now proactively manage their health and protect themselves against falls. The service requires a home base station and MobileHelp Connect, where you can check your medication and reminders history, schedule new medication, add and delete medications, change medication dosages, and enable the reminder button. This way, you’ll never have to miss your medication again. [Med Reminder]

It was challenging to get this activated because I bought this for my brother in Houston, and I live in NW Indiana. The unit is usually rented and shipped from the company already configured and ready to test by the user by opening the box, plugging it in, charging, if necessary, and pushing the panic button. However, the Amazon offering is missing the "ready to go" setup and took phone calls and coordination with marketing, technical support, my brother and me (multiple times) to get it activated. It is particularly frustrating when the "user" is disabled or at least in need of such a unit. My 4 star rating is mostly because of the unit's design, and the significant efforts from the team that helped me set it up. Of course Amazon is the reason I ordered it with confidence. Don

This is the Best System that I have ever had as well as used. In my own Opinion, Not Even Life Line is as good as this System, in my own Opinion. I Highly Recommend this to Anyone & Everyone that has " Any " Medical Condition that will Require the Assistance should they Fall, Trip OR anything else. On a Scale of One { 1 } through Ten { 10 }, 1 being the Worst of the Worst, and 10 being the Best of the Best, I would have to Rate this System @ a Ten { 10 }.

Perfect! Haven't had to use it yet, but feel great knowing I have it just in case!
July 18, 2017

As with the Classic System, you can choose between the wristband and neck pendants, which are compatible with the mobile device. The unit is also compatible with the Fall Button, which you can add to your plan for $10 a month.

With the patented GPS technology and AT&T’s nationwide cellular coverage, you can bring this portable device wherever you go, as long as there’s cellular coverage. Now, you can have peace of mind, along with the flexibility to travel and enjoy an active lifestyle.

MobileVitals Classic

Apart from MobileHelp’s line of mobile medical alert systems, the company is also partnering with Honeywell Life Care Solutions, offering another suite of medical devices called MobileVitals. This suite of peripheral devices is a step down from your standard telehealth monitoring, but with the same goal of empowering its users by allowing them to manage their own care, live an active lifestyle, and stay healthy. It’s compatible with MobileHelp’s medical alert systems and is ideal for the elderly who manage multiple chronic illnesses like diabetes and congestive heart failure – users who tend to have higher rates of re-hospitalization due to lack of continuous monitoring.

There are two different MobileVitals packages: Classic and Duo. Starting at $44.95 per month, the MobileVitals Classic allows the user to monitor important aspects of their health, such as their vitals – in the convenience and privacy of their own home. Combined with an in-home medical alert system (which are sold separately), the user can now have the safety net they need to stay protected and healthy all the time.

MobileVitals Classic make it simple and easy for the elder to track their blood pressure, weight, and more, on a daily basis.

The package comes with the following:

  • Easy-to-install Bluetooth smart-ready cellular base station
  • Choice of Bluetooth-enabled monitoring accessories such as:
  • Blood pressure monitor
  • Digital weighing scale
  • Pulse oximeter

With these, you can take your vitals and measurement information, which will then be automatically sent via Bluetooth to the cellular base station and to the MobileHelp Connect Customer Portal, where all data are securely stored. Through this health management platform, the user can simply log in to their account where they can access information presented in easy-to-understand graphs for selected periods of time (daily, weekly, monthly, or annually). And to remain consistent, the package also lets you easily set up vital reminders which will notify you when to take your measurements, via the base station.

This means that, unlike the Classic, the MobileVitals Duo has a wider voice and sound coverage in your home so you can always hear the emergency operator wherever you are. It’s the ideal choice for those who have larger homes and want the most comprehensive solution for in-home health monitoring.

With MobileVitals Duo, you can easily keep track of your weight, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and more, on a daily basis.

For as low as $56.95 a month, you can get the following devices:

MobileHelp Connect

Apart from their lineup of medical alert systems, MobileHelp also offers a service called MobileHelp Connect, which is where they really shine and showcase their being a mobility-first health monitoring solution.

MobileHelp Connect is a suite of online tools and programs to help elders and their caregivers (i.e. family members, friends, neighbors) who actively participate in their health and well-being. The standard features are included with any of the above packages, with no extra charge. MobileHelp medical alert systems have GPS technology in them that offer location tracking services, which can be accessed via MobileHelp Connect. This means that the emergency operator won’t have to ask the user for their contact details in the event of an emergency. Simply press the help button and an automatic notification will be sent to the user’s significant other.

Should an emergency crisis take place, the monitoring team will:

  • Call a family member or any authorized caregiver
  • Send an emergency alert via their preferred method
  • Provide them with a map of the location where the user activated the alert (via GPS), which works on both PC and mobile devices
  • Share any medical information whenever necessary

The MobileHelp Connect package includes the following:

  • System status alerts
  • Non-emergency alerts
  • Emergency alerts
  • Location requests via mobile device

You can have up to 30 location requests per month, which is included with the MobileHelp plan. If you want to add more to your plan, you can purchase at $5 for every 30 additional requests.

The features available for MobileHelp Connect will vary depending on your chosen package and accessories used. It’s available as an app for both Android and iOS, which means you can easily install it in your smartphone or tablet, and even through your browser.

With MobileHelp Connect, you also have access to the following features/services:

1
Medication Reminders

Taking your medicine on time is an important part of one’s daily life; one that allows you to go confidently about your day. Through Medication Reminders, you can now prevent missed doses and overdoses of medication, which is often the major cause of falls among the elderly.

[Med] With Medication Reminders, you can easily schedule reminders online using the MobileHelp Connect Portal. And from the cellular base station, you can receive friendly medication reminders, too. That way, you can make sure you take your medicine on schedule, every day!

Medication Reminders comes as an optional feature that you can add to your plan for only $5 a month.

2
Activity Tracking

With Activity Tracking, users can monitor their activity level on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis.  Just like Medication Reminders, you can add this premium feature to your plan for an extra monthly fee of $5. It uses the Fall Button for tracking activity levels and will display them in easy-to-understand graphs via the MobileHelp Connect Portal. It can be accessed online by you and any authorize person who can actively participate in your health management, such as family, friends, and health professionals.

Through Activity Tracking, authorized participants will receive instant alerts whenever there are abnormal periods of inactivity, as well as email updates to keep family members and/or caregivers in the know. It’s a simple and easy-to-use program that can serve as a valuable asset to encourage seniors to remain active and healthy.

Below are some of the online tools and features you’ll get with MobileHelp Connect:

  • Subscriber Information. Once you log in to your MobileHelp Connect account, you’ll immediately find the Subscriber Information, which includes the user’s full name and home address. This information is entered into the online portal immediately upon placing the order. This information needs to be updated regularly to ensure that it’s always accurate. Simply contact MobileHelp’s customer support team for any changes. And on the same page, you will also find announcements and useful tips that can help you make the most out of the portal’s new and existing features.
  • Location Services. Found at the top right corner of the Activity History page, the Local Mobile Device feature lets you send requests for the current location of a mobile device.
  • Account Settings. From this page, you and any authorized user can change login information. Here, you can also view billing information, although you will not be able to change it at this time. You must first contact MobileHelp’s customer support team if you ever need to make changes to your billing information.

Here, you can view easy-to-understand graphs simply by clicking the small gear icon found at the top right corner of each panel.

MobileHelp Connect Premium

There are instances when customers have to pay as much as $300 (sometimes even more) for replacing lost, stolen, or damaged equipment. The MobileHelp Connect Premium extends the list of the standard MobileHelp Connect’s useful features, with the added protection from costly replacement of lost or damaged equipment. You could pay zero bucks or just a small deductible where applicable. So for an extra $5 a month, you can enjoy a lot of perks that can save you hundreds of dollars every year!

Some of the benefits you’ll enjoy with MobileHelp Connect Premium include:

  • Lifetime Price Guarantee. The standard rate of your chosen service plan will never increase, as long as you maintain your Connect Premium service. This, however, does not include any ongoing promotional discounts.

  • 50% off Medication Reminders and Activity Tracking (if you buy the Fall Button)
  • 30 extra pings for location request per month (up to $60 per year value)

MobileHelp: The Fine Print

MobileHelp’s monitoring center is certified by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL), which tested the company’s systems to make sure they’re the safest, most efficient choice for customers. All of MobileHelp’s products and services are also FDA and FCC compliant, and have been properly evaluated by PTCRB. With these accreditations, customers are assured that they can trust MobileHelp’s services and that they are up to industry standards.

At the same time, MobileHelp’s products and services have no long-term contracts and hidden fees attached to them. Each system gives you the option to pay on a monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual basis. These flexible payment terms let customers use their products and services as long as they need, without having to pay for months that may not be necessary because they’re tied to a contract. The lack of contract also applies to AT&T’s cellular network, which is used for all their medical alert systems. This means that users have complete control over the type and length of service they receive.

Although users aren’t required to sign a contract, they must first agree to MobileHelp’s Terms and Conditions. Below are some of the highlights the company and its customers need to take note of:

  • MobileHelp can terminate services in the event that the customer fails to comply with their Terms and Conditions.
  • Customers are responsible for installing and testing the product they have purchased.
  • MobileHelp is not responsive for the lack of promptness the customers experience from its monitoring service.

Take note that we have only highlighted some important points, which does not compensate for reading the entire Terms and Conditions and/or contract provided by MobileHelp. Therefore, we advise our readers to see the full details of their terms of service and/or contract documents.

Additionally, MobileHelp provides a lifetime warranty, which means that the company ensures their products and services will perform for the lifetime of the customer, and that there’s no time limit to make a claim against product defects and workmanship.

MobileHelp Pros and Cons

Here’s a list of the things we like and don’t like about MobileHelp’s medical alert systems:

PROS:
  • Solo and Duo systems allow senior users to stay protected both in and out of their homes
  • Advanced GPS tracking technology automatically retrieves the user’s exact location
  • Waterproof help buttons allow user to bring it with them even in the bath/shower (where falls usually occur)
  • Fall Button can be added to any package
  • Has optional medication reminders and activity tracking features
  • You can cancel at any time, thanks to their flexible payment plans
  • No long-term contracts
  • Transparent terms of service
  • The only FDA registered and recognized mobile medical alert system available in the market

CONS:
  • More expensive than most competitors
  • The mobile device is a little on the big side, which may not be as convenient to carry around
  • No voice extender for the home base unit
  • The Fall Button comes at an extra price, and the company cannot assure its 100% accuracy in terms of detecting falls
  • Does not offer a lot of premium options, like carbon monoxide and fire monitoring
  • Requires a good AT&T cellular reception in order to work properly

Final Verdict

MobileHelp is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive mobile medical alert system we’ve reviewed to date. It’s built with unparalleled technology, and doesn’t require the user to connect the system to a phone line. And with GPS, it’s easy to locate the user no matter where they are in the US.

The system’s main strength lies in the fact that there’s virtually no limit to the help button’s range when they’re at home, thus making elders feel safe and confident at all times. The system also sports prominent features like automatic fall detection, medication reminders, activity tracking and more, thus allowing seniors to further customize their safety net according to their personal preference. Best of all, they have access to a team of highly skilled and trained emergency monitoring operators who are standing by 24/7 to assist them whenever necessary.

Though the system lacks some special features and some may find their products a bit costly, we still highly recommend MobileHelp for their top-quality equipment, options for every situation, and stellar customer service. If you really want maximum protection for your loved one, you really can’t go wrong with MobileHelp’s medical alert system.
